Austin Sump Pump Experts Flood Prevention for Basements & Crawlspaces

At Fast Plumbing, LLC, we know homes with an underground room rely on sump pumps to push the water against gravity to the upper floors. Most sump pumps sit in the basement, though some homes have sump pumps installed in lower level crawl spaces. Equipped with an alarm, many sump pumps let you know when there's a problem.

Sump Pump Troubleshooting

A sump pump should last around 10 years in the average home, though a well-maintained pump may have an even longer lifespan. We recommend servicing your pump once every 2-3 years, depending on the size of your home. Larger homes and commercial spaces have larger pumps which have to work harder; these pumps may need to be inspected more frequently to keep them operating well.

Signs you may have a sump pump problem include:

  • Mildew or mold in the basement - Even the smallest amount of standing water in your basement can quickly turn to either mold or mildew and it can become a nasty problem.
  • Pump operating loudly - If you are hearing strange or odd noises come from your sump pump, it could be either a mechanical problem or the system could be clogged. Maintaining proper maintenance can help keep your sump pump running efficiently as well as quietly.
  • Alarm frequently sounding on your pump - A quick thing to do is check the power source. It could be that it isn't receiving power. If this is the case, try resetting your breaker.
  • Pump running all the time - A jammed sump pump can equate to the pump running constantly. If your float switch isn't floating upward, this would cause your sump pump to run even when all the water has been removed.

As we mentioned above, if this is the first time the alarm has sounded on your sump pump, there may be a short in the wiring. Try flipping the circuit breaker connected to your pump and see if it resets the alarm. We caution our customers to be careful around their pumps, as the combination of electricity and water can be dangerous if you're not familiar with the appliance.

Avoid Basement Floods

Should your sump pump fail, you may experience a basement flood. The pump stops moving water away from the basement and the water pools in the sump pump pit. Eventually, the pit overflows. Pumps fail due to power outages, broken valves, and more.

Our expert Austin sump pump service technicians willquickly find out what's wrong with your sump pump, repairing it so that it is ready to protect your basement against costly, inconvenient floods.

As soon as you suspect a problem, reach out to our Austin plumbers! We serve customers throughout Travis, Hayes, and Williamson Counties.
